The 1999 BMW M3 Base was introduced to compete in the convertible market. The Base is a member of a series of one trim levels for the M3 which include Base. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for BMW. There is strong competition from vehicles from Infiniti.

The restyled M3 Base is equipped with a 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 24 valves. The engine is mated to a Getrag six-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2003 version.
